The Jazz Vegas Orchestra
Jazz Outreach Initiative's "Jazz Vegas Orchestra" (formerly the JOI Jazz Orchestra) is its most public-facing program, one which helps us connect with a wider jazz loving audience. A part of Jazz Outreach Initiative, the Jazz Vegas Orchestra' is a professional 18-piece big band comprised of some of the region's most acclaimed jazz musicians, educators, composers, and arrangers. Not only does the orchestra provide direct access to the public for JOI itself, but the musicians being thoroughbred artists are provided a unique opportunity to perform professionally live at the highest level together. Since created in fall of 2020, the Jazz Vegas Orchestra has achieved meteoric acclaim locally and nationally through its sold-out concerts and nationally syndicated radio and SiriusXM Jazz airings of its album, "A JOIful NoiZZ," which in 2024 was in Grammy® consideration. It's as much a meaningful program for our world-class musicians as it is a gateway for audiences to engage with Jazz Outreach Initiative itself.
The Jazz Vegas Orchestra's performances draw audience awareness to the near dozen outstanding youth-focused programs we operate for every age and demographic in Southern Nevada. When not in concert, donations, ticket sales, CD sales, etc., help pay for the orchestra members to go into local schools providing free jazz clinics to middle and high school jazz bands and work even with the band directors themselves, a program we call "JOI in Schools." Band members also provide high quality mentorship to students of Jazz Outreach Initiative's "Las Vegas Youth Jazz Orchestra." And over the summer, some of the band members assist with Jazz Outreach Initiative's free youth summer jazz exploration program, "Jammin' With JOI."
The orchestra members are paid musicians and individual gifts, sponsorships, and grants cover many of these costs. In its twice-monthly residency at Notoriety @ Neonopolis, the Jazz Vegas Orchestra entertains enthusiastic audiences with high quality public performances, a central part of Jazz Outreach Initiative's mission, to "connect the language of music to the language of life through education, outreach, and performances." Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, band members are paid from a separate fund while ticket proceeds directly fund our many youth projects, and the thousands of students those serve each year.
