For a little over a year, Jazz Outreach Initiative has been a part of a special project, the filming of a new documentary called, "Second Chair, Stage Left." Through the lens of film director Kevin Abrams (Marisol, I Got a Monster, If These Legs Could Talk, and others), the movie tells the story of the legendary musicians behind the legends from the great showroom era through today. Along for the ride are Jazz Outreach Initiative and its iconic Jazz Vegas Orchestra (formerly JOI Jazz Orchestra) which features prominently in the film.
"JOI" members and leaders such as Danny Falcone, Kenny and Dale Rampton, Curt Miller, and many more were interviewed throughout the production of the movie along with some of the biggest names in local jazz such as the great Tommy Porrello, "Doc" Little, Tom Hall, and others. And of course, the story will include how Las Vegas is serving as a beacon for the thriving jazz art form through its youth programs and the professional big band.
The video here was recorded during an 8 hour filming on Sept 7, 2024 at the Nicholas J. Horn Theater at CSN Cheyenne with gratitude to the faculty, staff, and crew at CSN music department and Horn Theater. The film session followed a similar full day in the recording studio (see our social media posts) laying down soundtrack with outstanding original music composed for the film by Nathan Tanouye.
Stay tuned for more announcements about this project as editing nears completion in preparation for release!
